Civil engineering is the broadest of among the engineering fields & currently large scale infrastructure development projects are going on in Sri Lanka.
Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the Sri Lanka which include expressways, highways, air & Sea ports, Water Treatments Plants & Distribution, Hydro Power Plants, Coal & Diesel Power Plants, Sewers, Dams, transmission towers lines, railroads, river bridges, overpass bridges, underpass bridges, flyovers, tunnels, irrigation canals, , airport runways, terminals, industrial plant buildings, multistory buildings etc.
Civil Engineering can be subdivide in to Highway engineering, Transportation engineering, Construction engineering, Irrigation engineering, Geo-technical engineering and Foundation engineering, Hydraulic engineering, Structural engineering, Coastal and Ocean engineering etc. Civil engineering projects can be subdivided into large scale, medium scale and small scale projects.
Projects can be further classified as foreign funded and local funded according to the funds allocation for the project and New, Augmentation, Rehabilitation and Extension according to implementation of project.
A civil engineering project is sequence of activities which involves the construction and renovation of a structure or significant alteration in the environment within specified time duration and certain amount of budget to accomplish the task.
